Where Does Google Chrome Browser Install Itself in Windows machine?

19 Feb

The guys at Google are very smart. They showed this smartness even when they released their new browser.  As you would have already known, Chrome Browser uses a web based installation wizard for the Windows based systems and gets automatically installed in a predefined directory.

Some of the users may find it hard to locate the installed location of the browser in your system. Few of the users also reported to have trouble in launching the browser in case if they forgot to set Chrome as their default browser. (This is due to fact that sometimes Chrome fails to register in Vista)

Well, if you are using Windows XP, then you can locate your Chrome in

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\

You may note that you need to replace the word ‘username’ by your actual username.

And Windows Vista users can locate their Google Chrome in the directory location as shown below:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\

You will never have this issue if you are in Linux (for which a beta version of Chrome browser is available). You can simply look that up in the menu and if you want to know about the location of the binary, then just look at the properties.

Have fun with Chrome!

In addition to the abovementioned directory I have 7 instances of “chrome.exe” in 7 directories in C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp. These directories have the name chrome_ followed by a 5-digit number.

Of course, in Vista the AppData folder is hidden so you cant see it! I had to type in the full path in the Windows Explorer address box. Or you can right click Properties on the Chrome short cut and copy the location.
