This edition of techblog is about a solution that allows you to check your emails, chat with friends, update social network sites, update tweets and so on. You can do all these from a single desktop application called Digsby.
It supports almost all email solutions like AIM, Gmail (Google Mail), Yahoo, your own POP3 or IMAP email account etc. It also supports facebook, Myspace, twitter, linkedin, MSN etc. The solution allows you to customize the application by applying personalized themes and skins. For example, if your system is having a low end configuration you can go for a simple AIM-like style. Other wise, you may choose the flashy 3-D conversation bubble skin.
Just like in ‘Pidgin’, this solution also allows you to manage the buddies in your list and you can sort the list by name or status. If you have used “IncrediMail”, then you might have tried the custom alerts available with that app. Here with digsby also you can perform all these.
Once you login, you will receive updates from your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn profiles. You can also view friend requests, direct messages, invitations to join groups and so on. Interestingly the solution also fetches the new photos posted by your friends and a list of upcoming birthdays.
You can also update your Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn status messages using Digsby. Here is the demo:
Needless to say, you will receive notification when a new mail arrives and it also helps you to reply back, all from the IM window! You can perform all essential stuffs like "Mark mail as Read" or "Report this as Spam” directly from digsby (InfoBox). And once you click on the new email notification, you will be logged in automatically in the browser. You can also ask the solution to fetch a list of unread emails in your inbox.
There are so many themes available for you to download and configure the software look.
Further, the website allows you to create custom widgets and post them.
As we discussed, the solution is a multi-protocol IM client which supports AIM / AOL, MSN (Live messenger) , Google Talk (Gtalk), Jabber, Yahoo, ICQ and Facebook Chat accounts. Just like in Pidgin, here also you can get a combined buddy list from all these services and it allows you to rename the buddies to some name that you can remember.
Another interesting thing is that Digsby enables you to send SMS to your buddies right from the IM window. You can also login to your multiple accounts with the same service provider (say, two usernames in Gtalk) and avoid duplicate buddies in the list! You can also view the old chat messages by searching through them (using the search tool).
After downloading the software (from here), you need to setup the Digsby account. This step is shown below.
Techblog recommends this solutions and you try the same by downloading it from here.
