Maintaining an online scheduler which can sync with your desktop calendar and mobile device is a must have application for any person in this world. It allows you to save all the events in your local computer and sends you an update message during that time. You may note that you can also configure your mobile device to receive this message so that you will never miss this information.
This edition of techblog is gonna show you how to do this using Google Calender, Mozilla Sunbird and a smartphone (like Android Developers Phone1, Blackberry , Nexus or iPhone).
First of all you need to download the Mozilla Sunbird from the Mozilla website (you can download the Windows , Linux x86 ,Mac OS X or Solaris version of the application). It is another popular open source software developed by Mozilla using the Mozilla Toolkit. It is a full-featured calendar application with a very user friendly interface.
Google Calendar Setup and Configure Your Mobile
You need to go to http://calender.google.com for configuring your calendar.
Once you are in this page, go to the setting page and select the ‘Mobile Setup’ tab. Here you can enter your mobile number and once you enter the same you will receive a verification code from Google.
Enter the code in the text box and press ‘Finish’.
You can also go to m.google.com and select calendar for accessing Google calendar in your mobile device.
Once you have done that enter the ‘Calendar details’. Here you can enter a name for your calendar and give a description (this is important if you are going to share your calendar with others) .
Done!
Mozilla Sunbird Setup
Once you have installed Mozilla Sunbird in your system. Go to Files—> Create a new calendar (or simply ‘New Calendar’). Now a new window will popup and you can select the option ‘On the Network’
Now select the CalDAV option from the format options and in the location field enter
https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/ [ your Google Calendar ID ] /events
You need to replace the text ‘[ your Google Calendar ID ]’ by your calendar id (the one you entered in the ‘Calendar details’ tab). Then, click Next
Now you can give a name to your new calendar in Mozilla Sunbird and select your preferred colour for the calendar.
The application will now ask you to enter your username (Google username with the ‘@gmail.com’ part) and password. Click OK
Now go to ‘Add Event’ and enter the details of your event in the new window appeared. If you want to save this in your Google calendar (synchronise), select the name of the Google calendar you just added.
Verifying
You can check whether the event is appearing on your Online calendar (Google calendar) by visiting the google calendar page.
Once you locate the event click on the same to read the details associated with the event. Google will also allow you to edit this entry online (or even delete the same). And all that you do there in the online calendar will also be shown in your desktop calendar.
Now you have successfully linked your online & desktop calendars and you can configured your mobile device as well.
