In this edition I am gonna introduce you to the World’s largest network of super computers. They are located at NSA and a large block of the building (almost the 1st level of the building) is allocated for cooling system alone and has a capacity of 8,000 tons of water. These water-cooled super computers themselves occupy the whole of the level 2 of the building.
NSA’s cryptologists are relying on these massive supercomputers to decrypt complex codes. It is interesting to know that though we may consider ‘brute force’ as a very primitive method (as it is labour intensive) for breaking codes, one of NSA’s super computers called ‘the thinking machine’ employs this method to break the code. It is estimated the system performs 70,000 billion operations to decrypt an effective crypto code. If you try this in your PC, it is likely to 22,000 years to complete the operation. In the case of the thinking machine, it hardly requires few seconds to complete the operation.
